Purpose: With a new pair of mufflers, air flows much better, which means the amount of air absorbed in the cylinder increase, while the amount of fuel added into the mixture in cylinder has not been updated. Therefore, a ECU (Engine Control Unit) tunning is needed.
How to do it:
Preparation
A VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface), type Screamin’ Eagle Pro Super Tuner, a Screamin’ Eagle tuner cable kit to connect from the motorcycle ECU to the VCI and to the laptop, a laptop, a software called SuperTuner.
Connecting: Connect all listed parts in Preparation section together, and open SuperTuner software thereafter.
Tunning:
After opening the software, select tune my motorcycle, then select the year, family, and model of the motorcycle (2018 Softail FXLR) and then select the basic calibration from available calibrations. I chose the 107 stage 1 for I only changed the air filter and mufflers. Other calibrations are for further upgrade such as 107 ci to 114 ci (cubic inches), upgrading cam, …
After opening the calibration, select record and choose “User Mode” to record by running on street.
Run the bike, ride it in your style, accelerate it in many ways from soft to heavy acceleration. Also ride the bike at low to mid to high rpm. Each time I wanted to record, I pushed the button on the VCI, and then stop after a sample ride is finish, and tap the button again when I start a new sample.
After finishing, connect the VCI to the laptop, downloaded and reviewed the suggested figures and apply those new figures into the working table.
Lastly, the idle rpm is increased in this calibration compared to the stock one (850 rpm to 950 rpm), so I decreased it back to 850 rpm.
Because in this calibration, the “decel enleanment” (short term of deceleration enleanment – amount of fuel being removed on deceleration) is suitable, so I increase is so that the bike decelerated more quickly.
For my motorcycle using the electronic throttle control, there is a phenomenon called late throttle respond, which means that the bike doesn’t accelerate as fast as the twist grip is twisted, I increase the responsiveness between the throttle plate and the twist grip in “throttle progressivity” menu.
I finally saved changes and programmed in my motorcycle.
